A Look Back at: January 14th, 2007

I completely forgot one more lesson from the Arenacross series of images… What is wrong with this image?

Look Back 14/365

What's Wrong with this Image?

Everyone, go ahead, shout out your answers.. Let me give you a hint though, minus normal little problems here and there, what is the #1 problem with this image for your client or promoters of an event?

The number one problem with this image is..

The seats in the background are empty.

This photo was taken on the last day of Arenacross here in Baltimore. It was a Sunday, early afternoon. Let’s face it, with two days of Arenacross already come and gone, church and whatever else. They couldn’t fill the seats. It wasn’t that it wasn’t a good show – it was, that’s just how it happens.

Promoters want images not only showing the action of their event, but the packed house of fans enjoying one hell of a show. So, while today’s Look Back was short and sweet, it tells us an important lesson about photographs. Know what your intended audience wants. This is a fine shot for me – but it will never show up on the cover of a magazine or in any Live Nation advertisements.

“Wait John, what do I do in this situation?”

Situate yourself so you are getting a background full of people or go higher and shoot just the action on the field without stands. Sometimes, you just can’t help it.
